Aufgrund des Gold-Stempels am Mundstück und „styled by Barbi“ am Holm wohl ein gut erhaltenes Stück aus der Zeit 1975-81. Der Kopf wirkt wie ein weiter Kelch dessen Form durch die straight grain Maserung verstärkt wird. Eine konische Bohrung die bei 23mm Durchmesser beginnt – das ist eine feine Sache für Flakes und ready rubbed Tabake, aber natürlich auch für alle anderen Tabake. Mit leichtem Schwung geht der Holm in ein Sattelmundstück über. Insgesamt eine stilsichere, wohlproportionierte Freehand aus der frühen Zeit – ein tolles Sammlerstück, aber sicherlich auch ein Top-Smoker der geraucht werden will.
Der 2011 verstorbene Rainer Barbi zählt bis heute zu den renommiertesten Pfeifenmachern unserer Zeit und hat sich in der Phase seines Schaffens einen dauerhaften Platz im Olymp der Besten seiner Zunft erworben. Sein Wissen um den Pfeifenbau war enzyklopädisch, sein praktischer Erfahrungsschatz profund, seine Technik vollendet, sein ästhetisches Formvermögen universell. Pfeifen von Rainer Barbi gelten daher als wertvolle Sammlerstücke und gehören ohne Frage zu den Eckpfeilern jeder systematischen Kollektion.
Based on the gold stamp on the mouthpiece and „styled by Barbi“ on the stem, it is probably a well-preserved piece from the period 1975-81. The bowl looks like a wide chalice whose shape is enhanced by the pattern of the straight grain. A conical chamber that starts at 0.91 inch in diameter – that’s great for flakes and ready rubbed tobaccos, but of course also for all other tobaccos. With a slight swing, the shank changes into a saddle mouthpiece. All in all a stylish, well-proportioned freehand from the early days – a great collector’s item, but certainly also a top smoker that wants to be smoked.
Rainer Barbi, who died in 2011, is still one of the most renowned pipe makers of our time and has earned a permanent place in the Olympus of the best of his craft during his creative phase. His knowledge of pipe making was encyclopaedic, his wealth of practical experience profound, his technique perfect, his aesthetic ability to form universal. Rainer Barbi’s pipes are therefore considered valuable collector’s items and are undoubtedly one of the cornerstones of any systematic collection.
