Pfeifendepot – 125 Jahre Jubiläumspfeife – Nr. 019 von 125 – by Reiner Thilo
Nimmt man diese Pfeife erstmals aus ihrem Ledersäckchen, fällt wohl zunächst die beachtliche Dimension auf. Das ist schon eine große Pfeife, das Füllvolumen mag zwar mittel sein, aber es ist viel Bruyere, was sich darum herum präsentiert. Dann liegt sie da in ihrer Pracht und das Auge gleitet über die cognacfarbene Sandstrahlung, die auch hier einfach nur wunderbar anzusehen ist. Der ausladende Dublin-Kopf bietet Platz genug, sein großartiges Ring-Grain auszufächern, der Übergang führt in einen ovalen, fast unmerklich gebogenen Holm, der in ein fast unmerklich gebogenes Mundstück überführt, mit dem man die Luft zu schneiden können meint. Das Holmende ist am Übergang zum Mundstück poliert, ebenso wie die glattpolierte Plateaufläche am Kopfrand der Pfeife. Der Kopfinnenrand wurde zusätzlich mit einer feinen Phase versehen. Mundstück 1A, was soll man große Worte machen – Reiner Thilo halt. Alles in allem ein sehr imposantes Stück, geprägt von Reiners persönlicher Handschrift, auch wenn ich den Gedanken nicht los werde, dass der Pfeife etwas charateneskes innewohnt.

When you take this pipe out of its leather bag for the first time, the first thing you notice is its considerable size. It is a large pipe, the filling volume may be medium, but there is a lot of briar around it. It then lays there in its splendour and the eye glides over the cognac-coloured sandblasting, which is also in this case simply wonderful to look at. The generous Dublin bowl offers enough space to fan out its magnificent ring-grain, the transition leads into an oval, almost imperceptibly curved shank, which leads into an almost imperceptibly curved stem, with which it seems possible to cut the air. The end of the shank is polished at the transition to the stem, as is the smoothly polished plateau surface on the bowl rim of the pipe. The inner edge of the bowl has also been given a fine phase. Mouthpiece 1A, what can you say – Reiner Thilo. All in all, a very impressive piece, characterised by Reiner’s personal style, even if I can’t shake the thought that there is something inherently charatanesque about this pipe.
