Die Geschichte des Pfeifendepots beginnt im Jahr 1899 mit dem Einzug in die frisch fertiggestellte „Hamburger Burg“ an der Methfesselstraße 86. Das prächtige Gebäude war für seine Zeit ein revolutionäres Konzept und wurde ein Jahr später auf der Weltausstellung in Paris mit einer Silbermedaille prämiert. In diesem besonderen Souterrain eröffnete Carl Schölzel im selben Jahr ein Tabak- und Zigarrenhaus mit angeschlossener Zigarrenproduktion im nahegelegenen Heußweg – und bis heute sind wir an diesem historischen Ort geblieben.
Seit 2014 führt Franz Fleischmann das Geschäft als vierter Inhaber fort. Nach Abschluss des Studiums der Philosophie und Kommunikationswissenschaften sowie etlichen Jahren als Fernsehjournalist tauschte er – inspiriert durch den Kauf seiner ersten Tabakspfeife – die stressbedingte Berufszigarette gegen die Pfeife als bewussten Entschleuniger. So wurde aus dem „Philosophen“ ganz folgerichtig der „Piposoph“ von Eimsbüttel. Per hanseatischem Handschlag übernahm er das Pfeifendepot von Gerd Jansen.
Seither baute Franz Fleischmann das bestehende Sortiment stetig fachbezogen aus. So präsentierte er als erster Fachhändler in Deutschland das Pfeifentabakssortiment von Hans Wiedemann (HU-Tobacco) in seinem Geschäft. Es folgte die Einrichtung des Online-Shops (pfeifendepot.de) sowie der Ausbau und die Spezialisierung der Werkstatt auf die Restaurierung von Estate-Pfeifen und Kundenreparaturen. Ergänzend zum vorhandenen Sortiment an Serienpfeifen wurde die Perspektive zusätzlich auf handgemachte Unikate von Pfeifenmachern ausgerichtet. In den letzten Jahren kam die stetige Erweiterung des Zigarrensortiments hinzu – inzwischen werden ca. 250 verschiedene Sorten vor Ort und im Web-Shop angeboten. Das Sortiment wird laufend ausgebaut.
Im Souterrain erwartet Besucher auf 96 Quadratmetern in sechs Räumen heute ein Sortiment von rund 1.500 Pfeifen – von Serienmodellen namhafter Hersteller über handgearbeitete Einzelstücke bis hin zu liebevoll aufgearbeiteten Estate-Pfeifen –, über 400 Sorten Pfeifentabak, eine breite Auswahl an Zigarren, Kau- und Schnupftabaken, eine feine Rum- und Spirituosenauswahl, die eigene Pfeifenwerkstatt sowie ein Veranstaltungsraum für Tastings.
2024 feierten wir unser 125-jähriges Bestehen – und blicken mit derselben Neugier nach vorn, mit der schon Carl Schölzel, Gerd Jansen und heute Franz Fleischmann die Tabak- und Pfeifenkultur in Hamburg lebendig halten.
Pfeifendepot – 125 Years of Tobacco Culture in Hamburg-Eimsbüttel
The history of Pfeifendepot began in 1899 with the move into the newly completed “Hamburger Burg” at 86 Methfesselstraße. The magnificent building was a revolutionary concept for its time and was awarded a silver medal a year later at the World’s Fair in Paris. In that same year, Carl Schölzel opened a tobacco and cigar shop in this unique basement space, with an attached cigar production facility on nearby Heußweg—and we have remained at this historic location ever since.
In 1971, Gerd Jansen (1942–2016), a trained shopkeeper and printer, took over the business. He focused entirely on pipes, cigars, and chewing and snuff tobacco. For over 40 years, he shaped the PfeifenDepot—the NDR once affectionately called him the “Pipe Man of Eimsbüttel” . Jansen also created the store’s distinctive, nautical look: he transformed the old storefront windows into round portholes, framed them with ropes, and designed the iconic lettering. In the late 1990s, he expanded the business to include the neighboring space, creating the “Priemhökers Probeerstuuv.”
Franz Fleischmann has been running the business as its fourth owner since 2014. After completing his studies in philosophy and communication sciences and spending several years as a television journalist, he—inspired by the purchase of his first tobacco pipe—traded in the stress-induced work cigarette for the pipe as a conscious way to slow down. And so, quite logically, the “philosopher” became the “Piposoph” of Eimsbüttel. With a traditional Hanseatic handshake, he took over the Pfeifendepot from Gerd Jansen.
Since then, Franz Fleischmann has steadily expanded the existing product range with a focus on expertise. He was the first specialty retailer in Germany to feature Hans Wiedemann’s (HU-Tobacco) pipe tobacco line in his store. This was followed by the launch of the online store (pfeifendepot.de) and the expansion and specialization of the workshop in the restoration of estate pipes and customer repairs. In addition to the existing selection of mass-produced pipes, the focus was also broadened to include handmade, one-of-a-kind pipes from pipe makers. In recent years, the cigar selection has been steadily expanded—approximately 250 different varieties are now available in-store and in the online shop. The selection is continually being expanded.
In the basement, spread across six rooms totaling 96 square meters, visitors can now explore an assortment of approximately 1,500 pipes—ranging from mass-produced models by renowned manufacturers to handcrafted one-of-a-kind pieces and lovingly restored estate pipes—as well as over 400 varieties of pipe tobacco, a wide selection of cigars, chewing and snuff tobaccos, a fine selection of rum and spirits, our own pipe workshop, and an event space for tastings.
In 2024, we celebrated our 125th anniversary—and we look to the future with the same curiosity that Carl Schölzel, Gerd Jansen, and now Franz Fleischmann have used to keep tobacco and pipe culture alive in Hamburg.
