Beschreibung

Neben dem hübschen Viking-Kopf bezieht diese Pfeife von Rainer Barbi ihren Reiz auch aus dem Spiel mit den Materialien – Bruyere – Ebenholz – Cumberland. Das Cumberland Mundstück wurde aufwendig mit einer Applikation aus Ebenholz verschmolzen, welche dann den Übergang und Kontrast zum Bruyereholzkopf bildet. Beim ersten hinsehen würde man das blank polierte Ebenholz eher für Ebonit halten – vermutlich ist das auch so gewollt. Das Ganze hat so einen augenzwinkernden Aha-Effekt nach dem Motto – das hättest Du wohl nicht gedacht! Und tatsächlich ist diese Kombination irgendwie verblüffend. Insgesamt ein interessantes Stück, dass auf charmante Art Rainer Barbis Experimentierfreudigkeit zeigt.

Nun muss man leider auch sagen, dass dieses Pfeifchen, vermutlich durch frühere Aufarbeitungen, etwas mitgenommen ist. Die Stempelungen zu identifizieren ist uns nur bei gutem Licht und mit einem Vergrößerungsglas gelungen. So lässt sich auf dem Holm die Stempelung – r. barbi – handarbeit – entziffern. Klassifizierung „CC“ und die Jahresstempel 102 an der Holmunterseite sind besser leserlich. Vermutlich wurde das Mundstück ursprünglich von Barbis Markenzeichen – dem „erhabenen“ „r. b.“ geziert, doch diese Stelle ist auffällig blank poliert. Mundstück-Holm-Verbindung zeigt einen Lichtspalt. Beginnende Haarrisse an der Ebenholzapplikation haben dazu geführt, dass sich die Verbindung mit dem Cumberland etwas gelockert hat – wirkt aber alles nach wie vor stabil.

Der 2011 verstorbene Rainer Barbi zählt bis heute zu den renommiertesten Pfeifenmachern unserer Zeit und hat sich in der Phase seines Schaffens einen dauerhaften Platz im Olymp der Besten seiner Zunft erworben. Sein Wissen um den Pfeifenbau war enzyklopädisch, sein praktischer Erfahrungsschatz profund, seine Technik vollendet, sein ästhetisches Formvermögen universell. Pfeifen von Rainer Barbi gelten daher als wertvolle Sammlerstücke und gehören ohne Frage zu den Eckpfeilern jeder systematischen Kollektion.

In addition to the pretty Viking shaped bowl, this pipe by Rainer Barbi also draws its charm from the play with the materials – briar – ebony – Cumberland. The Cumberland mouthpiece was elaborately fused with an ebony application, which then forms the transition and contrast to the briar bowl. At first glance, the brightly polished ebony would be mistaken for ebonite (vulcanite) – presumably this is kind of intentional. The whole thing has such a tongue-in-cheek aha effect according to the motto – you probably wouldn’t have thought of that! And indeed, this combination is somehow amazing. All in all an interesting piece that shows Rainer Barbis‘ willingness to experiment in a charming way.

Now, unfortunately, it has to be said that this little pipe, presumably due to earlier revisions, is a bit „worn out“. We were only able to identify the stamps in good light and with a magnifying glass. This is how the stamping – r. barbi – handarbeit – can be deciphered. Classification „CC“ and the year stamp 102 on the bottom of the shank are easier to read. The mouthpiece was probably originally Barbi’s trademark – the „raised“ „r. b.“ stamp, but this area appears to be meticulously polished. Mouthpiece-stem connection shows a light gap. Fine hairline cracks on the ebony application have meant that the connection with the Cumberland has loosened somewhat – but everything still seems stable.

Rainer Barbi, who died in 2011, is still one of the most renowned pipe makers of our time and has earned a permanent place in the Olympus of the best of his craft during his creative phase. His knowledge of pipe making was encyclopaedic, his wealth of practical experience profound, his technique perfect, his aesthetic ability to form universal. Rainer Barbi’s pipes are therefore considered valuable collector’s items and are undoubtedly one of the cornerstones of any systematic collection.
