Eleganter, schön geschwungener Hänger mit Sattelmundstück. Die Maserung folgt der Form des Kopfes in hübschem straight grain. Insgesamt sicherlich eine Barbi aus seiner besten Zeit. Leider gibt es aber auch ein paar Einschränkungen zu nennen. Wir haben eine deutliche ca. 5mm lange Schramme an der Vorderseite des Kopfes, spürbarer Übergang zwischen Holm und Mundstück, Stempelung am Holm sehr schwach, am Mundstück abpoliert. An der Holmoberseite im Bereich Kopfübergang findet sich ein zunächst kaum sichtbarer Riss im Holz. Es ist aber kein Holmriss im Sinne eines Schadens, sondern eher eine oberflächliche Fehlerstelle im Holz.

Der 2011 verstorbene Rainer Barbi zählt bis heute zu den renommiertesten Pfeifenmachern unserer Zeit und hat sich in der Phase seines Schaffens einen dauerhaften Platz im Olymp der Besten seiner Zunft erworben. Sein Wissen um den Pfeifenbau war enzyklopädisch, sein praktischer Erfahrungsschatz profund, seine Technik vollendet, sein ästhetisches Formvermögen universell. Pfeifen von Rainer Barbi gelten daher als wertvolle Sammlerstücke und gehören ohne Frage zu den Eckpfeilern jeder systematischen Kollektion.

Elegant, beautifully curved quarter bent with saddle mouthpiece. The pattern of the grain follows the shape of the bowl in a pretty straight grain. All in all, certainly a Barbi from his best days. Unfortunately, there are also a few limitations to mention. We have a clear approx. 5mm long scratch on the front of the head, noticeable transition between stem and mouthpiece, stamping on the stem very weak, polished off on the mouthpiece. On the upper side of the shank in the area of the bowl transition there is a crack in the wood that is hardly visible at first. However, it is not a spar crack in the sense of damage, but rather a superficial defect in the wood.

Rainer Barbi, who died in 2011, is still one of the most renowned pipe makers of our time and has earned a permanent place in the Olympus of the best of his craft during his creative phase. His knowledge of pipe making was encyclopaedic, his wealth of practical experience profound, his technique perfect, his aesthetic ability to form universal. Rainer Barbi’s pipes are therefore considered valuable collector’s items and are undoubtedly one of the cornerstones of any systematic collection.
